Common dog violet or fanaigse (image above) is also called wood violet as it favours shady areas and is a really important food plant for fritillary butterflies. It’s colour varies from deep violet to lighter blue, almost grey as it fades. On account of their sombre colour, people once wore violets around their necks to avoid drunkenness (MacCoitir, 2015).

In Search of the Dreamtime in County Clare (Clare’s Cultural Landscape)
with Michael Houlihan
Wonderful Wednesday Webinar
8pm, Wednesday, April 10th
The Dreamtime: ‘A sacred time in which both the natural world and human culture and traditions originated – these beginnings still resonate in the spiritual life of people today’. Cultural memories and associations make up our understandings of the non-recorded past, which are part of our communal story. Interweaving stories and landscape help to identify Ireland’s misplaced geography and give a sense of what was held in esteem in the past. Michael Houlihan lives in Quin, County Clare. He has studied Regional and Local Studies, and Archaeology and has an MA in Local History. He is a founding member of Quin Heritage and is currently completing a survey of Clare’s 140 children’s burial grounds (Kyles) for Clare County Council. Registration link is sent to Members. Sign up to be a member here. The webinar will also be recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel where you will find recordings of all our monthly Wonderful Wednesday Webinars to date.

Heritage Keepers Update
We are thrilled to announce the allocation of over €55,000 to support the 70 schools and groups currently participating in our Heritage Keepers programme. This investment underscores our commitment to fostering community-driven initiatives that celebrate and preserve local heritage. Each class and group involved undertook 10 hours of workshops with us exploring their local built, culture and natural heritage and then choose an action that would enhance or celebrate that heritage. Everything from biodiversity gardens in schools, local history publications, exhibitions of local crafts, fieldtrips, ‘Place days’ , podcast series, oral history projects, tree planting and murals are being undertaken between now and June. Check out our social media pages (@heritagekeepers for Facebook @heritage.keepers for Instagram) as we share updates on these remarkable groups and schools in action, completing their projects.
